In Churches, David Arnold

In Churches developed from a lifelong fascination with history and myth. The project springs from my attempt to isolate visual essences revealed in places of pilgrimage and worship, places of great visual and emotional power. In the same way that in the low light of the church one's eyes move slowly over and then rest upon details, the photograph begins with long exposures of the richly engraved and gilded altars, followed by exposures using flash to freeze details. The final composition of the photograph is assembled from multiple exposures, merging elements from each into a complete and integrated whole.
