"Shadows" series, Margaret Arnold

The color of shadows depends on many factors: the color of the object in shadow or casting a shadow, the color and direction of the primary and secondary sources of light, and the color of reflected light from nearby objects. In addition, the color of the shady side of an object is different from the color of a shadow cast upon that object by another. The color changes and shifts produced by shadows have such a profound effect on the apparent form of objects that one might expect to be confused or disoriented. But on the contrary, the deeper the shadows produced by or cast upon an object, the more firmly rooted in reality we perceive the object to be. We are grounded by shadows- they anchor us to the earth.
